A Time to Blog
August 24, 2005
I was talking to my friend Chuck yesterday, and he was asking me how much time it took me to keep up my blog. Good question. I think it comes and goes a bit - some days I spend longer, some days I don't blog at all. I'm trying to post at least once a day, but many days that is simply pointing to a resource I've found helpful. I guess it takes anywhere between 5-20 minutes a day, depending on how much I'm writing.
So I thought I'd ask all of you - how much time do you spend on your blog? How much is from actually posting vs. tweaking design? If you don't blog, does time play a role in this? I would love to hear from you - don't be shy!
Coming soon... thoughts on the nature of blogging.
PS - As far as blog reading goes, this is one I have to watch out for. I've found so many great blogs, but since I discovered Bloglines it doesn't take me near as long to sort through what I want to read and what I don't. Much easier than going to dozens of pages.

When I actually write something I don't spend a lot of time in the composition phase, but I have spent hours talking about it and thinking about it prior to that, so I don't know if that counts. I would say it takes me somewhere between 15-45 min. to write a post (the 45 is when I put in links, I'm not very good with html) but I only post a couple times a month. I would like to post more, but I think the quality would go down drastically if I tried to post everyday.
Now reading blogs is a whole other matter....I just started using bloglines and I love that. Save lots of time. But if you get involved in a conversation in the responses you still have to check back.

well, I definately spend much less time blogging and more time commenting and reading. Most blogs I would say are never longer than 10 min. But to read everyone's pages takes much longer so I usually check the pages of those friends that I know update late at night and daily in the morning and then the others in the evening. Of course this will all change very soon since I will be working morning and early afternoons out of the house and visiting all the pages gets a bit time consuming (even with high-speed) so I think I am gonna have to get Bloglines.

I'll have to check out Bloglines. I use BlogExpress Reader to subscribe to blogs such as yours that I enjoy reading on a regular basis. So I don't waste too much time reading. (I currently only subscribe to about 8 blogs, some of which are rarely updated.)
As for writing, I'm with you on wanting to write daily, but it hasn't happened all the time. When I do write, I usually take between 30 and 45 minutes to write, preview, edit, and format. Mostly, I write off the cuff and then tweak to try not to offend too many people!! ;)

i really wished i was better at keeping the blog up. i'd like to atleast post every other day but if you visit it, you'll notice neither mark or me do a very good job at that.
sometimes i go a week or even more without blogging which sucks cause when i finally do post, it's usually a huge entry. and it's not a piece of cake to write either. i probably spend close to an hour arranging my thoughts and composing them in such a way that will hopefully make sense to whomever reads the thing.
sometimes, after posting a huge entry, i'll post in tangents. the last two entries are perfect examples of this.
i would like to be more consistent with it, though. i really hate writing such long posts in one go.

I take 20-30 mins to write a well-written post.

I spend very little time reading due to bloglines. It saves a lot of time.
I go in spurts.
I very rarely write anything that is important so that saves a lot of time. I post a lot at night once the kids are in bed and my wife is reading.
