interesting post..

March 09, 2005

Adam Cleveland over at pomomusings has an interesting post right now called Your God is Too Small. It's based on a speech he gave as a student at Princeton Theological seminary. I just got done reading it, and am still formulating my reaction - which I will post over there, and maybe here as well.

For now, I wanted to point you to it and get your reactions as well. Adam is a very open minded guy, and someone I would say is pretty representative of the ethos of the emergent movement that is growing. (Disclaimer: I realize that the emergent movement resists definition, and that many hold many different views... I think Adam's post is fairly representational though.) And to be honest - it scares me.

Go here to check it out...

k, i read it. what exactly scares you about it? i have my own concerns to be sure, but i wasn't clear in you comment what about adam's post scared you. was it that he made it sound as though putting any kind of definitions in our faith made God "too small?" actually, i have an issue with that phrase. i got so distracted by that phrase (and by being sick) that i'm not sure what else he was saying. God is not "too small." no matter what, no matter how much we don't understand, we can't make God be any less than He is. our understanding of Him (in this life) is always going to be flawed, that's very clear in Scripture.
that and the thomas merton quote scared me the most actually but i did appreciate his perspective. may not agree with him on everything (i can't think of one person that i agree with on everything) but i appreciated his perspective.
now, tell me what about emergent scares you. i find it interesting that there really seems to be two different emergent groups. i know those that are a part of emergent but very strong and conservative in their doctrine and then i know others that swear by len sweet. it's as though emergent has become a style of doing ministry and almost a denomination. i'd like to hear more... cookies soon?
